We are officially two weeks away from the start of the 2019 CrossFit Open! For those who are newer to CrossFit and haven’t experienced the Open in the past, the Open is a five week online “competition” where CrossFit Headquarters releases one workout a week on Thursday that you will have until Monday to complete; there are RX and scaled divisions and workout standards. I put the word “competition” in quotes because for almost the entire CrossFit community, we are not really competing for a spot at the CrossFit Games, but participating in worldwide celebration of fitness. This is a chance to test your mettle and see how far you’ve come through your fitness journey so far.
In terms of logistics, we will be completing the Open workouts on Saturdays. We will keep the 9:00 class on the books with the Open workout for that week programmed as the class WOD. For what is normally the 10:00 and 11:00 class times, we will be running heats of the workout so that everyone who needs one can have a judge.
A few of my thoughts on the Open:
- I love the Open as a once a year test to see where you are in the CrossFit realm of fitness. Every year I’ve been doing CrossFit, I’ve seen people get first muscle ups, handstand push ups, lifting PRs, and the best double unders of their lives during the Open. There’s something about putting yourself on a bit of a stage that elevates your abilities.
- It is NOT just for those with a competitive streak. Obviously with the leaderboard and judging, individuals with a competitive streak will feel that fire burn. But, as I said, the Open is really a participatory event for basically all of us. It is a chance for us to come together as a community and cheer each other on as we all tackle a physical task together. It is more than anything a shared experience that I hope we can all do together. Personally, having been more competitive in the past and now less so, I’m looking forward to just participating alongside everyone else and enjoying the ride.
- Lastly, every year I hear people debate the idea of paying to participate in the Open. In order to officially sign up through CrossFit HQ, you will need to pay $20 to see your name up on the leaderboard. For those of you who only want to do the workout and not sign up, that’s fine. Here’s what I will say: when you know you have to submit a score and your name will be up there, it is different. I feel like I get more enjoyment out of that. The Open is five weeks for $20, that’s $4 a week. I know that pretty much all of you, participating or not will spend $20 or $4 a week in some frivolous during that time. You don’t have to sign up, but it’s not an onerous sum of money.
That’s my take. If you have any questions, by all means shoot me an email or ask me at the gym. Get excited!!!
